DFDS Review: DFDS Oslo to Copenhagen review, with abuse.
DFDS Review, by Earthyspirit.com
DFDS Seaways is a company that specializes in ferry boats with passengers for commercial purposes.
On Wednesday the 28th of August 2019, yours truly set ashore with this company for a trip from Oslo to Copenhagen, and back.
We boarded the boat and found our cabin, and it was “ok” standard wise.
This DFDS review, however, is NOT about the boat and their services, per se.
But more about the customer relationship that is downright shameful!
On the boat, we enjoyed ourselves, me and my girlfriend up until bedtime…
We had a few drinks to chill with and we went to bed quite early since we were going up early as well. What happened next was out of this world of comfort!
My girlfriend and I had a discussion going in which we were upset with each other just before we were going to bed. We normally don’t “argue” much but we were on opposite sides of a theme which we tried to discuss. And yes we may have been a bit loud on it…
What happened next…
All of a sudden, while we were sitting down quietly, the room lock “clicks” and the door goes open. There stand two people from the personnel on the boat, I IMMEDIATELY ask “What is it?” In a normal fashion just like if you were standing next to me, not screaming at all, but asking. We were both shocked by them just barging in.
What happened next is taken out of a crappy horror movie:
The gentlemen that opened the door, says nothing, but literally just grabs hold of me, drags me out in the hallway, with force, one of them takes a strong chokehold on me so I gargle, and cannot breathe. I did not resist anything!
Still 6 days after, I cough pink, blood from broken vessels from the stranglehold from the crew.
My knees get burned by the carpet as well, on the floor they handcuff me. I ask what is it, why are you doing this??? No response!
They eventually say I need to go the holding cell on the boat for 2 hours.
And they forcefully drag me away from the cabin with no further explanation.
At this point, my woman is standing behind them and saying “you don’t need to do this!“
And I am wearing ONLY two socks and a boxershorts.
Even though I had done nothing wrong, they dragged me OUT of my cabin in the middle of the night, no questions, and then puts me in a cell, which was freezing cold. And had only one rubber mattress and a hole in the floor.
On your knees, they said.
I sat down. No resistance since I want to get out as soon as possible!
They push me in the back against the floor to take off my handcuffs, with brute force.
Not even asking if I could lie down, they just punched me down in the back me, like goons.
The airconditioning was on, ice cold.
Now… at this point I am in shock but try to focus on keeping warm by standing and walking around. I am reasonable so I am at least thinking for myself, ok two hours should go quick, and when I get out I will talk to them and get to know the reason for this behavior and also accept an apology!
While in the cell, I cannot help but think that we may have been disturbing someone with our discussion, but this could not possibly be the case because people don’t usually get put in jail for nothing. Well, some people do.
So the not so fun stuff… Like this was fun at all…
What a DFDS Review you say? I agree.
I sit there, and I hammer the door to get in contact with the guard.
Time goes by, nobody comes to me to check-in, nobody comes with water, nobody talks or does anything…
While in solitary confinement the time is kinda hard to tell, but they said two hours and those two hours went by… I knocked on the door again, tried to talk several times trough the door to get out as they said.
After around 7 (!) hours or so, the door opens…
At this time I was really, REALLY freezing!
And it actually felt like I was being tortured. Ice cold, for what?
Had no water!
And nobody to talk to or explain to!
The guy who opened the door was Joakim Rundqvist.
Business Leader of Food and Beverage of PEARL SEAWAYS.
He was the boss for the crew members that put me there he said.
Joakim asked if I had gotten water, I replied no.
He looked away for a couple of seconds.
I told him about the incident from my end, how I experienced it.
And I told him I have Epilepsy. Then he froze a bit.
You see, I have epilepsy, my girlfriend has epilepsy and the reason for us discussing in the first place was because she had had a seizure. I found her on the toilet, topless. And her seizures makes her do that exact thing. That and pass out and be distorted in reality.
On top of that, she has K PTSD. Which stands for Komplex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She gets trauma easily.
Either way, the point of me sharing this is that we had a medical situation happen.
And that must be taken into consideration by all.
But nobody asked.
When you are put into a holding cell by Police, In Norway.
There are certain rules they must follow.
One is to provide water, other is to check-in, talk and see if everything is ok.
But before ANYTHING they must SEE a crime happen.
In this case, there was no crime.
And I was LUCKY that I did not get a seizure in my cell. I take medicines every morning and every night. I felt it coming but I took my medicines as soon as I was in my cabin again.
So, either way, what happened next was that Joakim Rundqvist told me they would get my clothes and I would get back to my cabin. This was after a little less of 7 hours in the cell. Not 2!
I get my clothes.
I have them escort me to the cabin as I had no key in my clothes to get in.
When we arrive at the cabin, they open the door to let me in, and when they have done that, one of them, says, we cannot travel by boat back to Norway!
At this point, I am out of words by the unfair sadistic treatment from the crew.
We try to ask: if that was needed? I also explained the story to Joakim Rundqvist and said he could share the story with the other guy so he could understand.
But they would not budge.
We paid for the trip, but was not allowed to travel with them???
Baffled, outraged, disappointed, and tired due to NO SLEEP we say “thanks a lot” and we started to get ready to pack, then Joakim comes close to my face and says something like “chill down now” with a tone that has NO place among a crew member. All I did was to stand there and say “Thanks”, tired as one can be from no sleep. And they just boot us???
We close the door after that have said theirs…
Shocked by the behavior! (Hence this DFDS Review)
And we start to pack. I try to sleep for 45 minutes first.
When I start packing after that time, they knock on the door… We open and there they are. Just saying ONCE MORE that we need to get off the boat!!!
We’re like? Why are you harassing us? Why are you coming AGAIN to say it?
And I must admit at this point my respect for the crew is lost. We pack our stuff.
And walk out to the streets.
Stuck In Copenhagen.
10 ish in the morning, stranded in Copenhagen…
We had funds to be on the boat and funds we used to pay for the trip in the first place… We had some food money, to use in Copenhagen but that was it…
After talking to several people we figure that since we were kicked out, for no real reason, and they were so mean I DID NOT WANT to even TRY to talk sense in them again in regards to us traveling with them back.
If they would not listen back then, why would they now?
So we start to look at our options.
We had not enough money to fly back.
Not even enough money to buy a bus ticket for both of us.
Money for a hotel room was not in our budget.
Both of us tried to get in touch with everyone we could borrow money from, but we met some issues with that as well.
One friend of mine could borrow me some money, but he was in a cabin in the mountains and his internet was screwy.
And one other person could borrow us some money, but he was not home before many hours later…
So what we had to do was to walk the streets of Copenhagen with all of our luggage, while waiting to the clock was around 17:30 before we got more funds transferred. Still, no real sleep and it was exhausting, to say the least.
When we finally had some funds to help us with the boat was already on the way back to Norway, without us.
The flights back were expensive, so we looked at other options.
Having had no sleep we found that we had to get a hotel for the night.
This set us back even more.
At least we could rest and get that much-needed sleep. This is vital for me as my Epilepsy makes me have routines on my eating/sleeping schedule.
Without it I get sick!
We find a hotel for the night which we needed a taxi for, it was cheapest. And we spent the last of our money on food. Should have followed this first, but thought we did NOT need to, of course: http://earthyspirit.com/how-to-plan-for-an-extended-trip/
The next day, we have to borrow more money for food and find the cheapest way home as our budget was low for this trip.
The cheapest option was the bus, 21:40 from Copenhagen to Oslo.
So we got stuck with our luggage again.
We decided to take that bus even though it is an 8 hour noisy (other passengers were not sleeping ) and uncomfortable ride, we really had no choice.
So we spent the entire day walking in the center of the city after we found a place to place our luggage for a fee.
When night came, we found the bus stop, got on, and got home.
For the record, this company is NOT following security procedures: https://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/i/dd55RO/ansatte-paa-danskebaaten-var-dritings
How do I feel about this?
I feel traumatized due to the caged animal handling.
And my girlfriend has been left with trauma which has lasted ever since!
I feel EXTREMELY and wrongly approached.
Had I resisted to talk with them, then I would understand more, but I did not.
(This DFDS Oslo to Copenhagen review would not be necessary if they treated us with respect and followed every procedure!)
I spoke to Joakim Rundqvist as mentioned, as he was the boss of the crew members.
I said I wanted to press charges and I wanted their names.
He said, yes, that was ok and gave me his card.
Today, I got an email from them because I asked for the names in an email yesterday. Their (Joakim Rundqvist) reply is:
- We do not agree.
- We do not give out the names of our employees.
At this point, all my respect for the parties involved is shattered.
My review for the crew and their handling of this case is 0.
DFDS is NOT a company I would want to travel with.
This concludes the DFDS Review: DFDS Oslo to Copenhagen review
